Shadows of the Future

August 27th, 2024

Back in South Korea for the end of summer. Flying out to California mid-September. College is going by pretty quick.

Shadows of the Future

The boy walks those time-worn halls

eyes fixed on a somewhere far away,

each move a careful step,

each breath held for tomorrow.

The world offered itslf in fragments:

autumn leaves, winter chills, spring buds

But he trades them all

for the weight of a nod

Late night readings lined with possibilities

but he flips the pages too fast,

dashing past the lines where life wrote itself

Only now, he stops.

he questions what he missed.

he yearns for not what he lost but what he never risked.

Still, I wonder:

Would the boy have found peace
in embracing the moment,
if it meant giving up the future
he so desperately sought?
